Writing stories

Postby Insanity test on Fri Sep 16, 2005 10:48 pm

How do you all go about writing stories?

I'm wrighting couple atm and they all started because I liked the opening sentence and was forced tocome up with something to go along with it. I have now started miticulously planning the entire story so I don't contradict myself and I have heard that a certain author of a certain Mr Potter series had the whole lot planned years ago before she even put pen to paper - or finger to keyboard.

So I was wondering, how do you do it?

P.S. I shall actually be abscent for a while, but will check back! I promise!

A Tuesday? Curious... Most curious...

I have heaps of stories at various stages of completeness ranging from just an idea in my head through well developed characters and plot all the way to finished and on paper. But none of the really good/big ones are finished. Yet :)

What exactly is meant by the above statement I may never know.

i love writing stories, i'm currently writing one that i am quite proud of. i've been working on for 1 1/2yrs now. you can imagine my panic when on holiday a few weeks ago, a powerful gust of wind blew all the pages over a 200m radius. i think i managed to round up all the pieces but i nearly had a break down. i felt really wierd in that split second as i watched the papers fluttering away, it was like watching my arm blow away, or something like that.

I know the feeling. I have lost one of the stories that I had been working on since I first started writing three years ago. I was so deressed by it. I was releived, though, to find later that my friend had a paper copy of it. I am currently trying to rewrite it, but it is hard.

It's an adventure/romance kinda thing. It's about a boy and his friends go on an adventure to find a lost kingdom. A lot of weird things happen to them.

I origionally had it all written out by hand and then typed but the written copy got trown away and my computer crashed. My friend had about the first third of it so I have to rewrite the rest of it.

Why did you want to know?

Here's a tip so you will never lose your work in the future:

First type your story in a computer, than mail a copy to yourself in your yahoo mail or google mail (they are both free to register). This way, even if your house is blown away by a hurricane, you will still have your story intact...

at least it didn't blow into a lake or river. I have often lost stuff to computer crashes and cursed the abscence of auto-save. I havn't yet lost an entire piece of work although I have come close.

Even better, actually write the story in Gmail *googlemail in the UK, blah*, and as you write, it autosaves every now and then, quite regualarly. Yay. :D
