Essential X-Men Volume 5 TPB, is written by Chris Claremont, was released on 2004-07-01 from Marvel Comics. The list price is around US$16.99.
Like Lewis Kapell says in his review, this is Essential X-Men volume 5, which does NOT contain "God Loves, Man Kills", which most of these reviews seem to be focusing on. The Essential X-Men books are black & white reprints of the Uncanny X-Men starting with Chris Claremont's first issue.
I enjoyed this, but not as much as the previous volumes. There's nothing remotely as strong as the Dark Pheonix saga, and nothing terribly important seems to happen (with the exception of Ororro's continuing mid-life crisis). This seems to be around the time Marvel started doing crossovers and "event" type comics, as apparently both Secret Wars 1 AND 2 took place during the time the issues in this volume were printed, along with several mini-series, and the launch of the New Mutants comic. The result is that it starts feeling disjointed (like a lot of the modern X-Men stuff does). Some of the most important events that are taking place in these character's lives aren't actually in this book, but rather in th...

Xenocide (Ender, Book 3), is written by Orson Scott Card, was released on 1992-08-15 from Tor Books, Usually ships in 24 hours. (*The prices are subject to change) Street price is around $7.99.
Ethical dilemmas with world-shattering consequences that threaten each person's faith and place in their society. Mr. Card uses this theme not only to tell a engrossing story, but to allow his readers to thoughtfuly reflect on the story as an allegory for ethical dilemmas faced by each reader in his or her life.
Mr. Card elects to tell his story through a series of linked scenes where characters talk about the issues/events facing them. Often, the issues themselves are referred to rather than shown since the characters might not have had direct experience with the events that would subsequently deeply impact their lives.
Though I have little experience with the history of novel structure, it seems to me that Mr. Card has chosen to use a story-telling technique that was common in the 19th century when readers expected a story told through dialogue. This is very different than the modern concept of novel in which the story is told through character action or action that affects characters...

Oryx and Crake (Random House Large Print (Cloth/Paper)), is written by Margaret Atwood, was released on 2003-05-06 from Random House Large Print. The list price is around US$28.00.
When I read A Handmaid's Tale in the late 90's, I was struck by how the post-apocalyptic world Atwood created rang so true. Mind you this was several years before the events of 9/11 thrust the unbelievably repressive Taliban-style treatment of women into the mainstream consciousness. But there it all was, foretold in A Handmaid's Tale in what became apparent post 9/11 as not such a parable after all.
But the world has changed dramatically in the last decade, and so with it our vision of what the apocalypse might look like. I expected Oryx and Crake to gel this new set of fears and threats plaguing the 21st century psyche into a believable societal collapse scenario, but disappointingly it did not. The world conjured by Atwood in this novel is cohesive, imaginative, and well-researched, but it just doesn't ring true. I can't reveal too much without spoiling, but I can't see society crumbling in the manner she illustrates. I don't know how it will crumble, not a clue, I just know that there ...

Battle Royale, is written by Koushun Takami, was released on 2003-02-26 from VIZ Media LLC. The list price is around US$15.95.
Koushun Takami was the master mind behind this suspenseful, intense, nail biting book Battle Royale. With potential and powerful words which exceeds the limitations of a book, it was also created as a high action movie. It is a story that immediately grabs your attention from page one. And unlike a typical "high school relationship" holds your interest til the very end. This story takes place in Japan, where a random class from Shiroiwa Junior high is selected to participate in a program operated by the government. Rules and regulations are given and the students find themselves left on a deserted island with their only mission is... to kill each other! As they get a feel for the game, they start to form groups, partnerships, create alliances and strategies that will increase their chances of survival. One by one the death count rises. And little do they know, through twists and turns, revealed to things such as love and betrayal. These once typical high junior high students will soon find themselve...

I always hated reading translated books, but this one doesn't lose an ounce because of William Weaver and Calvino! I highly recommend reading this book. It is mind-blowing, funny, and it look me so long to read because after every sentence I would think for a while about the meaning, our meaning, and what was going on in Calvino's mind! This is a life-changing book.

Doomworld (Star Wars: A Long Time Ago..., Book 1), is written by Roy Thomas, was released on 2002-07-17 from Dark Horse. The list price is around US$29.95.
Volume 1 is the weakest of the "A Long Time Ago" collections, but the quality of the stories shows a trend toward improvement. Marvel's adaption of the original "Star Wars" is passable, with wide variations in the quality of the artwork. The first story arc, concentrating on Han and Chewbacca after the movie, is dreadful.
The series gets better with the Waterworld/Crimson Jack stories, and really hits its stride around issue 16. The stories set on The Wheel (based around the schemes of Leia's old nemesis from the Senate and gung-ho Imperial Commander Strom) are quite entertaining. A fun look back at the comics I remember from my childhood, collected in a nice trade paperback format.

Well,I am a die hard crow fan.I watch the show ,saw the movie , and read this graphic novel. I think that the story line is great (I am emersed in the story line of anything crow related),However , if you saw the movie , this is great graphic novel for the reason that it has the cool crow story line working for it , but o'barr puts it in new words.Fantastic.A must have for all crow fans.

Death in Winter (Star Trek: the Next Generation), is written by Michael Jan Friedman, was released on 2005-09-20 from Star Trek, Usually ships in 24 hours. (*The prices are subject to change) Street price is around $24.95.
I had the opportunity to read this book while I was very sick with the flu. References to the Kevratan Plague aside, it really kept my mind off my symptoms. MJ Friedman is a masterful writer. I admired the skill and craftsmanship that were evident throughout the book. I was also very impressed with his ability to write some exquisite combat scenes.
I admit, I was a bit in the dark about the Stargazer characters, having not read the Stargazer series. Friedman did his best to recap some of the plot-lines and character arcs from those books, but I was still left scratching my head. Presumably he wanted to fill in some of the blanks without ruining the read should one go back and pick up the other books. But it was too much of a strain and a compromise, and wound up distracting from the main plot without really revealing much about the characters. I still enjoyed the book, however. The ending was a little shaky, it did seem rushed. But in the weeks that followed, when the book was finished...

Player's Handbook, Version 3.5 (Dungeon & Dragons Roleplaying Game: Core Rules), is written by Jonathan Tweet, was released on 2003-07-01 from Wizards of the Coast. The list price is around US$29.95.
Forget 4th edition - it's an de-evolution of the RPG.
While there are many who will argue there are plenty of problems with the 3E version of the game, the truth is that 3.5E is the culmination of the D&D game; the largest number of options, the most varied way to play and handle anything in the D&D game. It has a solid mix of in-combat and out-of-combat options to allow for nearly any play style one wishes to pursue.
It's completeness is, in some ways its own downfall. The sheer volume of material available for 3E can bankrupt an individual. There are rules for everything, and just about anything can be quantified if you look hard enough. DMing for 3E can be quite a chore at the higher levels and it doesn't work so well after 10th level (but no edition of D&D ever really has, truth be told).
With the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster Manual, you have enough for nearly endless hours of gameplay.

Urban Shaman (The Walker Papers, Book 1), is written by C.E. Murphy, was released on 2005-06-01 from Luna. The list price is around US$13.95.
"Urban Shaman" is a fantastic book that I absolutely could not put down. Admittedly, I often don't put books down that I start, but I was amazed that "Urban Shaman" kept my attention as it did. Jo is such a loveable, BELIEVABLE heroine, and her antics continually made me laugh out loud. I've heard that the second book isn't as great as the first, but the first one was good enough to make me risk it.
