The World's Greatest Super-Heroes
Submitted by Reviewer (not verified) on Saturday, November 12, 2005 - 23:39 ( D )

The World's Greatest Super-Heroes, is written by Paul Dini, was released on 2005-08-01, is made by DC Comics. The list price is around US$49.99. (*The prices are subject to change) Street price is around $31.49.
From beginning to end, this book is gorgeous. This hardcover slipcased edition is a tactile wonder. Everything from the cover to every single page has a pleasant, glossy sheen not found even in other DC Absolutes. Now in previous absolute editions, I have lamented the inclusion of both a slipcase AND a dust jacket, (hello, redundant!) I am pleased that this book features both, because it's just more canvas to feature the Ross's to-die-for art.
Now if you're expecting to see a lot of the Justice League together, you'll be disappointed because 2/3 of this book is Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel in their own stories. However, the 80 page LIBERTY AND JUSTICE story that concludes the book is the cream of the crop. If you need a bigger JLA fix, then look to Ross's series JUSCICE.

In short, this should be on the shelf of any DC comics fan, and considering that the BATMAN and WONDER WOMAN paperbacks are selling for more than this collected edition, it's a friggin' steal at 32.99.

Essential X-Men, Vol. 5
Submitted by Reviewer (not verified) on Saturday, November 12, 2005 - 23:39 ( C )

Essential X-Men Volume 5 TPB, is written by Chris Claremont, was released on 2004-07-01, is made by Marvel Comics. The list price is around US$16.99.
Like Lewis Kapell says in his review, this is Essential X-Men volume 5, which does NOT contain "God Loves, Man Kills", which most of these reviews seem to be focusing on. The Essential X-Men books are black & white reprints of the Uncanny X-Men starting with Chris Claremont's first issue.

I enjoyed this, but not as much as the previous volumes. There's nothing remotely as strong as the Dark Pheonix saga, and nothing terribly important seems to happen (with the exception of Ororro's continuing mid-life crisis). This seems to be around the time Marvel started doing crossovers and "event" type comics, as apparently both Secret Wars 1 AND 2 took place during the time the issues in this volume were printed, along with several mini-series, and the launch of the New Mutants comic. The result is that it starts feeling disjointed (like a lot of the modern X-Men stuff does). Some of the most important events that are taking place in these character's lives aren't actually in this book, but rather in ...

Xenocide (Ender Wiggin Saga)
Submitted by Reviewer (not verified) on Saturday, November 12, 2005 - 23:39 ( C )

Xenocide (Ender, Book 3), is written by Orson Scott Card, was released on 1992-08-15, is made by Tor Books, Usually ships in 24 hours. (*The prices are subject to change) Street price is around $7.99.
The other Orson Scott Card.

There are two Orson Scott Cards it seems, there is the writer that writes interesting ethical and political explorations, and can be brilliant.

Then there is the other, that lets religious pontification get in the way just to a ridiculous level, and as such is horribly tedious and tired. This book is unfortunately an example of the latter to throw in with the Alvin Maker stuff.
In Canada, it costs about CDN$10.00 in Amazon.ca
And it's available in Amazon UK, but I'm not sure about the price.

Oryx and Crake (Random House Large Print)
Submitted by Reviewer (not verified) on Saturday, November 12, 2005 - 23:38 Large Print

Oryx and Crake (Random House Large Print (Cloth/Paper)), is written by Margaret Atwood, was released on 2003-05-06, is made by Random House Large Print. The list price is around US$28.00.
The book didn't know what it wanted to be, I think. It wasn't the stark realism of The Road nor the weirdo, amusing, corporate-controlled future of Max Barry, but a combination of the two.
And I don't mind the no ending bit with literature, but that only works when A) it's literature and B) it's not set up for an ending.
We are set up for a decision, maybe a resolution. But instead we get nothing. It wasn't profound, it was a cop out.

Good writing, though.

Battle Royale (Battle Royale)

Battle Royale, is written by Koushun Takami, was released on 2003-02-26, is made by VIZ Media LLC, Usually ships in 24 hours. The list price is around US$15.95. (*The prices are subject to change) Street price is around $11.16.
This book was amazing. It had an excellent blend of action, friendship, and even a little romance. I reccomend this book very highly.
I knew I was hooked as soon as I picked it up. A brief summary of the plot on the back cover described it as a "pulp classic" and I must say that it did not dissapoint.
In this novel, a group of Japanese teenagers are subjected to a trial devise by the government. They will all be place on a deserted island and forced to kill each other until only one of them remains. As they fight (some willingly, others not) to ensure their own survivals the reader receives a glimpes into their everyday lives in a country ruled by the morally corrupt.
This entertaining, and touching tale with remain with me.

Cosmicomics
Submitted by Reviewer (not verified) on Saturday, November 12, 2005 - 23:38 Short Stories

Cosmicomics, is written by Italo Calvino, was released on 1976-10-04, is made by Harvest Books, Usually ships in 24 hours. The list price is around US$14.00. (*The prices are subject to change) Street price is around $11.20.
Amazing, and though it's hard to write a cliche like this after reading something so incredibly original, it truly is unlike anything else you'll ever read. Calvino uses higher math elements as his characters and the construction of the universe and probably the destruction of time as his story line. Like the best of carnival rides, who knows what the heck's going on? But the ride is fantastic and just exists in its own space. Have fun with this-- but be careful: you might get lost at the outer/inner rim of creation.

Doomworld (Star Wars: A Long Time Ago..., Book 1)
Submitted by Reviewer (not verified) on Saturday, November 12, 2005 - 23:38 Graphic Novels

Doomworld (Star Wars: A Long Time Ago..., Book 1), is written by Roy Thomas, was released on 2002-07-03, is made by Dark Horse. The list price is around US$29.95.
Before the days of Dark Horse there was: THIS STUFF. On the one hand, this is what we once had. On the other hand, some of it was really corny. Sometimes the art was pretty awful. Other times it was the story line. Yet, through it all it was a lot like a grade B movie in comic book form; fun to read though you could never take it too seriously.

Some of the ideas were pure corn. How about a giant carnivorous rabbit (Jaxxon). The Don Wan Kioti character was right out of "The Man of La Mancha." There are other examples, but these suffice to give you a rough idea.

In spite of all the corn, these things are fun to read. The stories take me back to the days of yore when comics really were oriented towards young boys rather than adults, and we ate these things up. Of course, these were what we had, and we had no comparison to the quality graphics in todays comics. Many people in the industry are loath to call them comics.

While the book is a bit pricey, on the other hand you do get 20 comics. Th...

Death in Winter (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

warning! Spoilers galore, but nothing as spoiled as this horrible book!

How bad is this book? Let me count the ways:

*contains Stargazer characters in a Next Generation book. Ok, this is fine if you've read those books (and I've read a few), but even for fans of the 'other' Picard series had to get tired about hearing details they've already read before. For those who haven't read them, little will make sense.

*contains NG episode retellings. Hello? Was the author bored? I've SEEN these episodes.

*I 'hardly knew you characters'. Absolutely filled with them. Some girl who loves some guy who loves somebody else who gets killed. After a while, you couldn't keep any of it straight - Decalon, Phajan, Kito, and on and on it goes, nameless faceless characters with little backstory and no future (literally!).

*'They did what?' characters. Totally inexplicable actions, from Crusher's rejection of Picard after her life was nearly taken, to page abo...

Monster Manual: Core Rulebook III (Dungeons & Dragons, Edition 3.5)
Submitted by Reviewer (not verified) on Saturday, November 12, 2005 - 23:38 General

Monster Manual: Core Rulebook III (Dungeons & Dragons d20 3.5 Fantasy Roleplaying), was released on 2003-07-01, is made by Wizards of the Coast, Usually ships in 24 hours. The list price is around US$29.95. (*The prices are subject to change) Street price is around $19.47.
This book is a work of art, and that's just looking at the text. The monsters are much easier to use, with details like their flatfooted AC and their grappling bonus included in their stats. The only thing bad I can say about this book is they removed the two pieces of Elmore art. Maybe they thought it made the other art look bad by comparison.

Harry Potter and Philosophy: If Aristotle Ran Hogwarts
Submitted by Reviewer (not verified) on Saturday, November 12, 2005 - 23:38 History & Criticism

Harry Potter and Philosophy: If Aristotle Ran Hogwarts, was released on 2004-09-10, is made by Open Court, Usually ships in 24 hours. The list price is around US$17.95. (*The prices are subject to change) Street price is around $12.21.
As a Harry Potter fan, I pick up almost anything with Harry in the title. Often, I put it back down after a cursory glance. Not this time!

This book is a collection of essays on philosophical questions raised in the Harry Potter series. It would be a good adjunct for anyone taking a college level philosophy course, to see a practical application of using philosophy to aid in understanding literature - or the use of literature to understand philosophy!

Player's Handbook: Core Rulebook I (Dungeons & Dragons, Edition 3.5)
Submitted by Reviewer (not verified) on Saturday, November 12, 2005 - 23:38 Gaming

Player's Handbook: Core Rulebook I (Dungeons & Dragons, Edition 3.5), was released on 2003-07-01, is made by Wizards of the Coast, Usually ships in 24 hours. The list price is around US$29.95. (*The prices are subject to change) Street price is around $19.77.
The revised 3rd edition of the Dungeons & Dragons game was one of Wizards of the Coast's least popular moves. It's not because the revision failed to improve the system, but rather because it was released less than three years from the original 3rd edition (or 3.0) core books. It was seen as a blatant money grab by Wizards of the Coast, and as such angered a lot of the D&D community.

That said, the revised 3rd edition is a definite improvement. It cleans up a lot of minor problems with the original release, and most of the changes it makes are for the better. Rangers are no longer the poor cousins to other warrior classes. Spells have been cleaned up. Skills have been streamlined, and animal companions now level up with their master. All in all, the game is improved -- not to the same level as moving from 2nd edition to 3rd edition did, since that would require the release of an entirely new edition, but the improvements are there and plain to see.

Unfortunately, the product here suff...
