I'd heard of _Battle Royale_ for a long time before finding out that yes, it was available in English. I promptly obtained the novel, the manga and the movie, and scuttled off to devour and compare.
The novel (whence the whole thing originated) has an intriguing premise, and the story is told fairly well---but I noticed in quite a few places that the translation wasn't as smoothly written as I'd have preferred. That said, it's a book that definitely deserves reading.

Cosmicomics, is written by Italo Calvino, was released on 1976-10-04, is made by Harvest Books, Usually ships in 24 hours. The list price is around US$14.00. (*The prices are subject to change) Street price is around $11.20.
Amazing, and though it's hard to write a cliche like this after reading something so incredibly original, it truly is unlike anything else you'll ever read. Calvino uses higher math elements as his characters and the construction of the universe and probably the destruction of time as his story line. Like the best of carnival rides, who knows what the heck's going on? But the ride is fantastic and just exists in its own space. Have fun with this-- but be careful: you might get lost at the outer/inner rim of creation.
And it's available in Amazon UK, but I'm not sure about the price. |

Doomworld (Star Wars: A Long Time Ago..., Book 1), is written by Roy Thomas, was released on 2002-07-17, is made by Dark Horse. The list price is around US$29.95.
Before the days of Dark Horse there was: THIS STUFF. On the one hand, this is what we once had. On the other hand, some of it was really corny. Sometimes the art was pretty awful. Other times it was the story line. Yet, through it all it was a lot like a grade B movie in comic book form; fun to read though you could never take it too seriously. Some of the ideas were pure corn. How about a giant carnivorous rabbit (Jaxxon). The Don Wan Kioti character was right out of "The Man of La Mancha." There are other examples, but these suffice to give you a rough idea. In spite of all the corn, these things are fun to read. The stories take me back to the days of yore when comics really were oriented towards young boys rather than adults, and we ate these things up. Of course, these were what we had, and we had no comparison to the quality graphics in todays comics. Many people in the industry are loath to call them comics. While the book is a bit pricey, on the other hand you do get 20 comics. Th...

This is a great book, if you are a sci fi fan. The vendor was first rate. The book arrived quickly and in excellent condition. There are some true sci fi classics in this volume, and the authors from the "Golden Era" of Sci Fi are all represented here. I intend to keep this book on my shelf forever. Myron

The Way Into Narnia: A Reader's Guide, is written by Peter J. Schakel, was released on 2005-07-15, is made by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, Usually ships in 24 hours. The list price is around US$15.00. (*The prices are subject to change) Street price is around $10.20.
Professor of English and internationally respected student of C.S. Lewis' work Peter Schakel presents The Way Into Narnia, a guide written especially for first-time readers of Lewis' beloved classics of children's literature. Suggesting that the best way to enter Narnia is to read the Chronicles of Narnia as fairy tales, The Way Into Narnia walks the reader through each of the seven books and concludes the tour with a section of annotations meant to clarify unfamiliar words and unusual written passages. Especially recommended for lay readers and beginning literature scholars seeking greater familiarity with the series, The Way Into Narnia is a highly recommended supplement for getting the most out of Lewis' immortal stories.

The Star Wars Poster Book, is written by Stephen J. Sansweet, was released on 2005-10-13, is made by Chronicle Books, Usually ships in 24 hours. The list price is around US$50.00. (*The prices are subject to change) Street price is around $35.00.
While this book has a ton of Star Wars Posters listed, it's a book for the reader who is not familiar with poster collecting, or the highest level of Star Wars poster collecting. There is no inbetween. The book is basically a giant list with illustrations. But the list includes posters that are so obscure that it's almost not worth putting them in this book (Coca Cola and Burger King advertising posters come to mind.) There is also a few places where they just went overboard; there is one page where they have pictures of about 20 different posters, all from Episode I, all the same poster, just printed in different languages. I would have liked to have seen a little more detail on the things that matter more to collectors like how to spot a bootleg from an original, what the 77/21 means on the bottom right of the Star Wars 1 sheet, details on different poster printers and their posters (Kilian Enterprises for one), etc. I would also like to have seen more information on where to get posters other than...

Another great graphic novel in the Clone Wars series. This picks up from where volume 4 left off, once again going to the story of Quinlan Vos. This book didn't have any real good battles but was filled with more lightsaber fights than in the first 5 volumes combined. Great art (as usual), and the storyline gets even more interesting when no one knows whose side Vos really is. It would have been nice to see more of Yoda since the last story from volume 5 wasn't the best. A great ending to this, though.

The Unseen Queen (Star Wars: Dark Nest, Book 2), is written by Troy Denning, was released on 2005-09-27, is made by Del Rey, Usually ships in 24 hours. (*The prices are subject to change) Street price is around $7.99.
The Unseen Queen is the second book in the Dark Nest trilogy and like the first book I found it to be great adventure in the Star Wars universe. I particularly loved the way that Troy Denning cleverly continued the Killik hive mind/Force parallel that he began in The Joiner King, it really sets the Killik situation up to be a source of further understanding for the Jedi and for me a thought provoking new way to look at the force that still gels with the spirit of the films.
Troy Denning also shows great skill at writing interesting political characters for example Chief of State Cal Omas being portrayed as not a cardboard cut out straight out good or bad guy, but simply a man concerned about preserving the good he has done since taking office. The Unseen Queen also has a number of very funny subplots especially the part about Luke, Han, and Starship replicas which a I found hilarious, plus the action scenes are also good with all the major characters getting to show their skill in either fighti...
