Decision 2008 - US President Race

Politics

This is one US election I don't feel too negative about. All the leading candidates looks reasonably capable. Barrack Obama sounds rational and intelligent. John McCain looks experienced and well versed. Even Hillary Clinton seems marginally acceptable.

But the election isn't all flowery and rosy. The worst candidate I think is Mike Huckabee. His speech is great, as good as Obama, but his intelligent is at the level of George W. Bush. His view on Iran showed his ignorance. It is sad, but seems unavoidable, that he may become the vice president running-mate for John McCain, in order for him to reach the conservative votes. I guess nothing can be perfect? I just hope that John McCain, if elected president, won't die too soon and leave the throne to Huckabush.

The Hair Machine Dilemma

Politics

According to the hair doctor: Baldness is caused by "bad hair".
Fact: "bad hair" kills "good hair", 1 "bad hair" can kill 100 "good hair".
Fact: An average person has an average of 100,000 hairs, out of which 0.1% are "bad hair", 99.9% are "good hair".

A hair machine can identify a bad hair and terminates it before it kills the good hairs.

We have 2 brands of hair machines:
Brand A: It identifies 50% of bad hair as bad hair, and will also misidentify 1% of good hair as bad hair.
Brand B: It identifies 90% of bad hair as bad hair, but will also misidentify 10% of good hair as bad hair.

Surge of Bush and the Shift of Blame

Politics

‘To oppose everything while proposing nothing is irresponsible,’ Bush Said.

Brilliant. I always thought Bush is brilliant. Unlike all his critics, who thought: "Bush is like a rock, only dumber." If you really listen to his words, you will think Bush is brilliant, at least his brain is. By his brain, I don't mean the hazelnut-sized organ in his hollow skull, I meant Karl Rove. The quote must be his idea.

Imagine you just made a gigantic mistake of invading a little country in the Middle East, opening the Pandora box of terrorism, bankrupting the greatest economic in the world, ruining the reputation of the first democracy in the west, handicapping the mightiest empire in history, would you have the guts to stand in a crowd and call other people, "irresponsible"? Bush is not only brilliant, he is courageous.

funny

The average software developer, for example, doesn't own a single book
on the subject of his or her work, and hasn't ever read one.
That fact is horrifying for anyone concerned about the quality of work in the field,
for folks like us who write books, it is positively tragic.

Programming without an overall architecture or design in mind is like exploring a cave
with only a flashlight: You don't know where you've been, you don't know where you're
going, and you don't know quite where you are.
