Overall I like this book and the author. But it seems that Surowiecki is more comfortable in the column style than in putting a broad book together -- similar to fellow New Yorker author Malcolm Gladwell, who also stumbled in "Blink". "Wisdom of Crowds" contains some powerful insights and anecdotes, but I share at least some of the reservations of other readers about the discursive style. We sometimes need to wait until the end of a chapter for Surowiecki to pull the rabbit out of the hat. And this indeed means, as other reviewers noted, that the same story could have been told in less pages, leaving more space to back up the main argument. What is regrettable and even irritating about this is that one repeatedly thinks that the book misses realizing its full potential.
I guess this is a good book to read within organizations, for leadership trainings, for teaching research methods (by helping to inculcate caution about findings) and generally for any curious reader or undergraduate. This TMNT rules.
I just got it 2 days ago and I am already on World 3 level 1. I just can't wait to unlock the arcade game. This game [TMNT 3]reminds me of TMNT 1 for the GBA in a way. Except, you get to have help from all 4 turtles. Also, April helps you too. So, at least the Turtles aren't trying to save her again. I love the fact that some of the old enemies from previous games are included. Like, the mouse robots that will chomp you on the arm. Pros: Awesome, game two games for the price of one. Cons: You, have to defeat all the levels up to 9-1 to get the arcade old school game. Had I never read the two Earthsea novels upon which this movie was based, I would still have been disappointed by the movie.
The film won a number of Leo awards, including Best Visual Effects, but I must say that, even having seen it on a small screen, the effects were often dreadful. They looked to me as though someone were using state-of-the-art CGI to mimic the cheesiest special effects of thirty years ago. None of the male leads stood out or had any kind of screen presence. I think Danny Glover is a perfectly able actor, but he was miscast here, although he was the only one who looked the part racially. The female roles were somewhat better cast, but many of the actors looked uncomfortable speaking some of the dreadful dialog. LeGuin tells the Earthsea stories in a style that mimics, but not too closely, some of the great epics of the past, for instance the Odyssey and the Bible. This gives it a timeless and mysterious quality and atmosphere. The dialog writing of the ... The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul & Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency: Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
Submitted by Reviewer (not verified) on 13 October, 2005 - 22:06. Some Book Reviews
The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul & Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency: Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, is written by Douglas Adams, was released on 1999-12, is made by Audio Literature. The list price is around US$36.00.
Being a long-time fan of Douglas Adams and his "Hitchhiker Series" doesn't automatically mean you will fall in love with Dirk Gently, but...
If you have any love of Norse Mythology, and enjoy a great Detective story...you will love these stories immensely. Lurking refrigerators, redheaded housekeepers, Odin, Thor, jets, the birth of new Gods, Valhalla, cripsy linen sheets, exploding desks at airports, missing passports, pregnant cats, Coke machines, time warps, hot potatoes, rock groups, soothsayers, strange horoscopes, greed, history, mythology, and of course at the center of it all is the humor of Douglas Adams. These are two of the most thoroughly enjoyable stories to be found on tape, and I give it 5 stars, it never flags, it holds your attention to the last paragraph of the last page. And it is especially nice to hear them read in the author's own voice, unabridged. Every little jewel is included, nothing is lost in the transition from print to spoken story. You can buy this in Amazon.com You can also buy this in Canada, but I don't know the price. |

I must admit that I have not read the precusor to the Dirk Gently series, but do not feel that this put me at a loss in reading this novel. Douglas Adams has developed an entire world within a world that makes little sense but is smashing fun (if a little confusing to read). "The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul" is a fast-paced mystery filled with humor, satire, and the kitchen refrigerator.
A mysterious accident occurs at Heathrow Airport in which a check-in desk and its attendent disappear in a ball of flame. Without any other reason, the occurence is written off as an act of God. But the question remains as to which god would do such a thing. It is up to Dirk Gently, holistic detective, to try to uncover the mystery that spans two worlds and gods among mortals. If only he can figure out what that has to do with his recently decapitated client as he embarks on the most miserable day of his life. "The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul" can be initially confusing since Adams skips b... It's around US$7.99 in Amazon.com And it's available in Amazon UK, but I'm not sure about the price. |

All the books plus a separate story together in one volume! What else could I wish for? If you enjoyed the movie, (okay, okay, there are always some differences between movie and book) you are going to love the books. It's that kind of ironic humour that makes you laugh through intelligent remarks, not silly statements.

This book is pure fun! It's a great trip. The only problem I had was that at the beginning of the book I kept trying to follow and understand every little detail...which is difficult (if not impossible!). I read the first few pages over and over again trying to figure out what the heck was going on; it was very confusing. For people who are very detail-oriented and get frustrated easily, this is not the book for you. But, if you allow yourself to get lost in Adam's world you will throughly enjoy The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Years ago, while browsing in a book shop, desperate for something to read during lunch, I stumbled across this little book. I was a big fan of Adams but had never heard of Gaiman but decided to pick it up and give it a chance. It was well worth it as it was a great read.
Some time later, I spotted a new hardback on the shelves at the same book shop. I knew the name Pratchett and had to think for a while as where I knew the name Gaiman from and then recalled that he had written that little book called Don't Panic, so I picked it up. Hi there! Don't panic, I'm just going to give you enough information to tell you that, if you already own the primary, secondary, and tertiary phases of this, as I do, then you're going to want this, *but* be advised that this is probably the weakest of the sets so far, which is why I'm only giving it four stars instead of five.
Also, you ought to know that, unlike the first three sets, this one is only two discs, or four episodes, long, and that the person credited as "Christian Slater" is not really Christian Slater, but instead . . . Well, if you're a fan of audiobooks as I am, you'll recognize his voice instantly. He's actually very well cast, since he is in fact in California, and his initials are . . . Actually, his initials would give the whole game away. So I won't tell you that either. But he's done a lot of readings of his own work, and recently, he's done a lot of other readings also, for authors as disparate as Ursula K. LeGuin and Orson Scott Card. There. So now you should k... It is fitting that this audio adaptation of Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was voiced by actor Stephen Fry. Fry was a close friend of the late Mr. Adams, and he also narrates the new H2G2 movie as the voice of the Book. Fry does a great job of making this classic novel come alive, drawing the listener into the story. This audiobook makes a great tribute to Douglas Adams and the world and characters he created in the H2G2 universe.

I don't know what happen in the end yet since I haven't finished reading this book. With only two chapters read, I already can say this is one of my most favourite books. I love this book not because it's sick (or should I say despite it's so sick and dark), but because it's full of riddles. It makes you think. I already felt somehow enlightened after just reading two chapters of this book. Now I won't say this is a mainstream book, and its dark subject has deprive of the popularity it actually deserves. I would say the author is extremely clever and probably in the same level as Lewis Carroll. I will surely hunt down the rest of his books and devour them.... When I found this item on the audiobook rack at my local bookstore (the one with the cafe stapled onto it) it took me at least an entire minute to figure out what it was I was looking at. I thought it must be a reissue of the original radio episodes (from 25 years ago) or a new reading by somebody or other. Gradually it dawned on me like a sledgehammer through molasses that this was an all-new radio series based on the third Hitchhiker's book performed by the (surviving) original radio cast, four years after the untimely death of author Douglas Adams.
"Mine," I judged as soon as I sorted out just what the hell it was. I was delighted to find that Stephen Moore was still alive and had returned to voice Marvin the Paranoid Android again. Peter Jones has unfortunately passed on, but makes a posthumous appearance in this new series, as does Douglas Adams himself! From the moment I popped it in my CD player and began listening to it, tears bubbled into my eyes. Here again was that won... It's not really my place to judge a classic that is older than I am, but I didn't find this all too exciting. The story itself was rather dry and predictable and so was the humor. If you like British humor, than this is definitely for you. I don't know, I guess I was expecting more realistic science fiction, in which case this book certainly doesn't deliver. In short, think Monty Python + Outer Space + A couple hits of Acid.
