I am an Elementary education major and had to view the video and compare it to the book for a lesson plan. I thought it accurately depicted a lot of things but was incorrect in a lot of other ways. It did bring the characters to life but left out some key scenes. Rontu in the movie was not one of the wild dogs from the island but was left by the Aleuts whereas in the book he was described as one of the wild dogs. Other than that I found it a bit slow and old fashioned. Overall I thought it was good and would use it with a class to view critically and to compare to the book.

I think that this was the best book! It was It wasamazing how Karana was able to survive, tame 2 wild dogs, raise 4 birds, and help an otter.She was left on the island when her people went to a far off country east of the Island of the Blue Dolphins. Her brother being killed by her enemy, the wild dogs. After making the wepons to kill the dogs she turns up to take home the leader, the wounded dog, Rontu. Rontu would bark at the gulls, bark at big fish, and bark when the Alute girl, Tutok came. Tutok left a necklace for Karana she began to make a present for Tutok. Then later Rontu died. Karana found another dog that looked liked Rontu. She cought it and named it Rontu-Aru. Read the book to find out the rest! It's a wonderful book!

After reading Island of the Blue Dolphins a few days ago, I must say I'm highly impressed.

Throughout the entire book, I pictured the situations of Karana on her island as I read it. Amazing were the descriptions and imagery used in this novel, and it seems like a wonderful book for people of all ages.

I would also consider it an emotional book. At certain points in the novel, I could sometimes feel what Karana was feeling. For example, when she saw a ship approach the island, when she found what happened to Rontu towards the end, when she discovered what had happened to her people--I could see her perspective of events like this. This helped me relate more to the story, and understand it better.

I enjoyed the characters as well. Karana seemed very strategical in her situations as well as emotional towards all the animals she kept as pets on the island, and what she did on it.

Almost everything Karana did on the island kept me entertained, and wanting to read more. I wanted to know what kind of animals she would find next, if she would ever get back home, and what plot-changing event would happen next.

For a book of its genre, I would say it is fantastic. Even though it wasn't a story with much action, I would still say it's partially cliffhanger, with a desire to read on to see what happens.

All in all, I give this book an excellent rating. I had fun reading it and I'm sure you will too.
