A Brilliant Madness is helping me through some ofthe saddest days of my life. I fell in love with someone who is bipolar, and our relationship is currently on a fast track to oblivion. Reading this book is helping me understand the illness as well as feelings of those who suffer from the disease and those who love them. There are no easy answers. The frankness with which Patty Duke discusses her life and the facts in alternating chapters are helping me focus on what is possible in a relationship and what the limitations may be. Thank you so much for your insights.

Patty Duke's book is entertaining because she had a true Hollywood background. Contrary to some reviews that criticized her writing style, I thought it was clear, warm and easy to read. The informative chapters are the best I've ever read about manic depressive illness and the footnotes and research listed are exhaustive. This book was co-authored by another talented lady. I'm bipolar and if I'd have to choose a book that best describes this illness, I'd choose this. She has the spirit of a loving mother reaching out to make you feel better.

Patty Duke gives an amazing description of what it is like to have Bipolar Disorder. It made such a difference in my ability to understand my Bipolar family members! This is staying on my shelf, along with "The Bipolar Child" and "IF YOUR CHILD IS BIPOLAR" as my top resources!
